Jeremiah K. Murphy, CPA

Jeremiah K. Murphy, CPA and owner

I graduated from the University of Maryland in 1968 with a major in accounting and I went to work right away in my father's New Jersey CPA firm. I worked there for nine months and then enlisted in the US Army. During my three year tour of army duty I worked as a Special Agent for US Military Intelligence. The work included security investigations and electronic sweeps of secure facilities. After my army tour I returned to New Jersey and my dad's CPA firm. By the fifth year, I had earned my CPA credential and was able to move across the country to the Mendocino Coast where, along with my wife Lorraine, we set up our household and raised our three children.

History of the Firm

I opened my firm as soon as I was settled on the Coast in 1976 and I have been serving clients from my office ever since.

In addition to my work with clients, I teach the beginning accounting course at College of the Redwoods and I have written "Buy-Sell Agreements" for the Commerce Clearing House's electronic "Solutions for Business Advisors" web site.

My Credentials

I am a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) as well as the California Society of Certified Public Accountants. My firm has participated in the Peer Review program prescribed by the AICPA and the California Society of CPAs. Our firm is examined each three years, the last one in 2007 and we received an unqualified report (that's good).

In October 2003, Commerce Clearing House published my first book Understanding Business Buy-Sell Agreements and in 2006 the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants published a “Charitable Deduction Worksheet” based on my article at this web site on charitable deductions.

Areas of Specialization

My practice is a "general" practice, meaning I do a wide range of work for clients.  I have always considered that the primary goal of good accounting and tax advise is the ability to explain the issues in a way that someone who is not familiar with accounting or tax jargon can understand.  This communication is at the core of my practice.  In essence, I can do the work correctly and in a timely manner and then communicate to you the issues that I think are important to you for you to move forward in your business and your tax planning.

advisors_certified.gif (1672 bytes)QuickBooks has become the most popular accounting software for small businesses and I have been a QuickBooks Certified Advisor since the program began in 1999. I have taught, and will teach the Introduction to QuickBooks course at College of the Redwoods.

Photography

It began as a job in the US Army when I was stationed in San Francisco, CA but I lost the dark room and fancy cameras when I left the Army in 1971.  Since then photography has just been a hobby.  However, with the advent of digital cameras and software to mimic the work that I used to need a dark room to do, I have come back to a more serious pursuit of the craft.  Please drive on over to my other web site, www.blackberryhillonline.com to see some recent work and find out about the Compact Disks that I am producing that contain high-resolution photographs.
